I f other countries were to declare war with Singapore, not only the adults suffer . We, children will suffer too. Everyone has a part to play in Total Defence. The soldiers help to fight and protect Singapore. The doctors and nurses takes care of the injured people, and we, children should study hard for the future. Children are the future of Singapore, as one day, all the prime ministers of Singapore will die, and children will take over the role. In order to make Singapore go forward, the children must work hard. I hope all the children in Singapore have the same thoughts as me. When it comes to Total Defence Day, this means that the whole nation have to co-operate with each other, and help each other, so that the military forces will be able to help us. If we do not play a part, the soldiers who are fighting for our country, their efforts will be in vain. We all have a part to play. For example, national pride. If the enemies threaten us, and force us to tell them secrets for our country, we can't, we have to stand up for our nation. Or else, why will we be saying the national pledge everyday? Although children are small, this dosen't show that we wouldn't be able to help. There are A FEW ways we can. For example, during food rationing and water rationing. We can help by not being greedy, and take not too much food and water. We can't be selfish as other people needs food and water too. If we are too stingy, the others will soon die. And when they die, it will affect our nation's forces. And soon, our forces will die out and Singapore will have to surrender to the other country. Do you want that? If yes, think about what we will have to go through when we are in the hands of another country. We will be tortured everyday by other soldiers, and what do we eat? The enemies can't possibly give us food and water! Instead they will kill us and take over the country, COMPLETELY! It's just like the Japanese Occupation. Even though the British surrendered, the Japnese still continued to kill us and make us suffer.

Last friday,we celebrated Total Defence Day.It was a very interesting day as we had to do some food rationing.We also got a chance to build a simulated toilet in our own classroom.Our teachers, did a presentation about the importance of Total Defence Day.I now agree that we as children play a part in Total Defence whether we are aware of it or not.The five defences of Singapore are:

2. Economic Defence
3. Military Defence
4. Civil Defence

As kids , our part is to help in Singapore's economy by studying and receiving good grades.Boys can also help in Military Defence.The theme for Total Defence this year is

So I would like to say that Total Defence is important and we need to play our part so that history will not repeat itself.

I DISAGREE that we do not have a part to play in Total Defence.

Although we are children, we can still help in Total Defence! There are five aspects in Total Defence. They are the military defence, economic defence, social defence, pyschological defence and civil defence.

In military defence, we can help by joining the National Service when we reach the required age and not try to run or avoid this service by giving some excuses.

In social defence, we can help by preventing racists from bullying other races that they do not like and make fun of them. We can learn other cultures from other religions and races and not make fun of them as well.

In economic defence, we can help by growing up to be a useful person to the society and get a good job to earn money.

In psychological defence, we can help by being mentally and physically prepared for anything that might happen in the future. We should not go panicky or nervous when something happens example : Fire. However, we should follow all instructions given and respond quickly to all the orders.

In civil defence, we can help by taking part in activities organised in our school for example: water rationing exercises, food rationing exercises and In-Place-Protection exercises. These will help us to know how to respond when something happens.

When we reach adulthood, we can also help in all the defences and mantain peace and happiness in Singapore.

• We must take the evacuation exercises seriously, and not fool around.
• When you go abroad, please do not make fun of that country, for fear that they may have a grudge gainst Singapore. ( AND IT IS ALL BECAUSE OF YOU!!!)
